COURSE SUMMARY



Marine and ocean sciences

Marine and ocean sciences is a course that focuses on creating an understanding of the various life forms at the coastline and the conditions that may be within the coastline. Two A-level subjects are required, and they may be any of the following subjects: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Biology. Geography and Geology are other useful subjects that one can have. Laboratory work is undertaken at different stages of the course study to broaden students' experiences. Work experience is not part of the coursework that is covered within the study. Graduates from this course may work as Marine Surveyors, Environmental Officers, Geophysicists, and Oceanographers.


Marketing

Marketing is a course that equips students with skills that enable them to promote a product or service that is being offered by a company. This course is closely related to advertising, market research, public relations, consumer behaviors, and event organizations. There are no specific A-level subjects that are required to undertake this course, but it is useful to have Business Studies and Media Studies. No laboratory work is usually conducted during the, but students are actively engaged in groups' presentations. Work experience is not part of the coursework that is to be undertaken. A graduate from this course may work as an event manager, media planner, retail manager, and an advertising executive.


Materials Science

Materials Science can also be referred to as Materials Engineering, and it is a course that deals with equipping students with skills that they require so that they can manufacture and develop new materials. The skills acquired foster innovation that is required to come up with new products that will be relevant in this modern times. A-levels in Mathematics and Physics are required to undertake this course, but it is useful to have Chemistry. Workshops and laboratory work is usually involved during the course study. Work experience is not part of the coursework that is to be undertaken. Graduates from this course may work as product developers, quality control officers, materials engineers and metallurgist.


Mathematics

Mathematics is a course that aims at giving students an insight of how to solve mathematical problems and also develop analytical skills. A-level in Mathematics and Further Maths are required to undertake this course, and it is useful to have Physics. No laboratory work is undertaken during this course study, but students are presented with tutorials that enable get insights on how to go about mathematical problems. Various aspects that are usually covered in the coursework include Probability, Differential Equations, Algebra, Calculus, and Regression ANOVA among others. Graduates from this course may work as Mathematics teacher, accountants and analysts among other related courses.


Mechanical engineering

Mechanical engineering refers to a course that is focused on design and manufacture of various products that include satellites, mobile phones, and medical equipment among many others. The course combines knowledge from physics, mathematics, and computing to enable students to come up with these products. An A-level in Mathematics is required to undertake this course, and it is useful to have Design Technology and Further Mathematics. Laboratory work is conducted during the course study and students are engaged in lectures, seminars, and practical workshops. Graduates from this course may work as mechanical engineers, aeronautical engineers, and design engineers among many other careers.


Media studies

Media studies is a course that focuses on equipping one with skills that are necessary to present information on various media platforms. Editing films, presenting programs over the radio and reporting skills are some of the skills that a student can acquire from this course. A-levels in Media Studies and English and literature language are required to undertake this course. It is also useful to have Psychology and Sociology. No laboratory work is undertaken, but students are actively engaged in practicals and workshops. Some of the aspects that are covered in the course include cultures of consumption, power, and resistance, elements of visual media and screen media among many others. Graduates from this course may work as video editors, sound recordists, public relations officers and multimedia designers among many others.



Medicine

Medicine is a course that aims at creating an understanding of the human body functions. It focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases that may affect humans. To undertake this course, one must have A-levels in biology and chemistry, but it is also useful to have critical thinking. Some of the aspects that are covered in the coursework include biochemistry, body systems, human reproduction, molecules to diseases, and epidemiology among others. Laboratory work is usually undertaken in the course of study and students are also actively engaged in practicals and tutorials. Work experience is part of the coursework that should be undertaken. Graduates from this course may work as doctors, aid workers, health service managers, and medical specialists.


Microbiology

Microbiology refers to a course that deals with the study of micro-organisms. Some of the aspects that are covered in the coursework include virology, bacterial genetics, metabolism and molecular biology and microbial functions among others. To undertake this course, an A-level in Biology is required, and it is useful to have Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Laboratory work is usually included in the coursework and students are also engaged in fieldworks. Graduates of this course may work as toxicologists, quality assurance officers, microbiologists and as medical laboratory scientific officers.


Midwifery

Midwifery is a course that aims at producing graduates who can support pregnant women before, during and after the birth of a child. Some of the aspects that are covered in this course include responding to needs during the antenatal period, foundations of postnatal care and preparation of autonomous midwifery practice. A-levels in Biology or another science is required, and it is useful to have Psychology, Sociology, and Chemistry. A lot of lab work is undertaken in the course of study, and there are numerous practicals and tutorial that are administered to broaden students' knowledge. Graduates from this course may work as adult nurses, midwife tutors, and delivery suite managers.


Music

Music is a course that equips students with needed in the composition, recording, reviewing, administrating, marketing and archiving music in general. Some aspects that are covered in the coursework include techniques of tonal music, composition and theory, musicianship, instrumentation and harmonizing among many others. A-Level in music is required as well as grade 7 or 8 for any main instrument. It is also useful to have English and History. Not laboratory work is conducted, but students are engaged in studio work and workshops. Graduates from this course may work as music tutors, art officers and sound technicians among many others. 


Nursing

Nursing is a course that focuses on studying the needs of patients which may range from physical, psychological and social needs and how to meet them. Some of the aspects that are covered in the course study include personal development, health issues and ethics, therapeutic approaches and practice, epidemiology, and managing complexities in care delivery among others. The course involves laboratory work and practicals that help broaden students' knowledge. To undertake this course, an A-level in Biology or another science is required, and it is useful to have Sociology, Chemistry, and Psychology. Graduates from this course may work as paramedics, care home managers, and as nurses in general.


Nutrition

Nutrition is a course that deals with the chemistry and biology of food and maintaining healthy nutrition. Some of the aspects that are covered in the course include the development of new foods, food production, food safety and hygiene, diet and efficient exercising and public health promotion. A-Level subjects that are required include Chemistry and Biology, and it is useful to have Physics. Dietary-based workshops are involved in the, but work experience is not part of the coursework. Graduates from this course may work as nutritionists, dieticians, and health information officers among other related careers.


Optometry


Optometry is a course that equips students to prepare them with skills required to examines eyes and determine the problems of a patient and offering the most professional solution. Chemistry and Biology are some of the A-level subjects that are required to undertake this course, and it is useful to have Physics. Various aspects that are covered in the course study include optics of the eye, foundation biology, practice management, low vision management and assessment and many others. Laboratory work is involved in the course study and students

are also engaged in practicals. Graduates of this course may work as Optometric, Opticians and as Orthoptists.  


Pharmacy

Pharmacy is a course that equips students with the necessary skills that are necessary to prepare and dispense drugs depending on the needs of a patient. Chemistry and Biology A-levels are required to undertake this course, and it is useful to have Physics and Mathematics. Some of the aspects covered in the coursework include Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Drugs Discovery and Delivery, Responding to Symptoms, Dispensing Competence and Pharmaceuticals among others. Laboratory work is usually covered in the course study and student are engaged in group discussions and presentations. Graduates of this course may work as pharmacologists, retail pharmacists, packaging engineers and quality assurance officers.


Philosophy 

Philosophy is a course that focuses on creating an understanding of the ideas that have been expressed by great thinkers. Students also share their opinions on the same ideas and critically analyze the ideas to determine the motive behind the thinkers. To undertake this course, there are no specific A-level subjects that are required, but it is useful to have English, Mathematics, Religious Studies, Classical Civilizations, Religious Studies, and Philosophy. Some of the aspects that are usually covered in the coursework include metaphysics, philosophical problems, and philosophy of films and literature. No laboratory work is undertaken in the course study, and work experience is not part of the coursework. Graduates of this course may work as marketing executives, information analysts and management information officers.


Physics

Physics is a course that focuses on the study of nature and some of the properties of matter. Additionally, it also creates an understanding of the energy from sub-atomic particle to galaxies. To undertake this course, one is required to have A-levels in Mathematics and Physics, and it is useful to have Chemistry and Further Mathematics. Some laboratory work is involved in the, but work experience is not part of the coursework. Various aspects that are covered in the course of the study include plasma and fluids, fabric physics, contemporary physics and stellar physics. Graduates of this course may work as instrumentation designers, medical physicist and in other related jobs.


Physiology

Physiology is a course that focuses on the structure of living things and how they function to achieve various processes. This course enhances understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Chemistry and Biology A-levels are required to undertake this course, and it is useful to have Mathematics, Psychology, and Physics. Laboratory work is involved in the coursework and students are engaged in group discussions. Tutorials and practicals are also essential activities that are carried out to enhance understanding. Some aspects that are covered in the coursework include epithelial physiology, neurobiology, integrative neuroscience, the cell and inherited disorders among others. Graduates of this course may work as medical researchers, exercise, perfusionists, and retail pharmacists.


Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a course that equips students with the skills that are necessary to provide a solution for patients with skeletal injuries, neurological problems, and breathing issues. An A-level in Biology is required to undertake this course, and it is useful to have Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Physical Education. Various aspects covered in the coursework include clinical skills, neurological physiotherapy, cardiovascular health, foundations in health and social care among many others. Laboratory work is involved in the course study and tutorials may be offered to enhance student's knowledge. Plant science

Politics

Politics is a course that enhances understanding of how governments work and how public policies are developed. No specific A-level subjects are required to undertake this course, but it is useful to have Sociology, Politics, Philosophy, Law, History, and Sociology. Skills on how to collect, analyze and present political data are imparted to the students. Some of the aspects that are covered in the course study include international politics, the political economy of development, modern British politics and making of the modern world. This is an all lecture-based course that does not involve laboratory work. Graduates of this course may work as political advisers, political analyst, and industrial relations officer.


Psychology

Psychology is a course that focuses on studying the mind. Psychology helps to create an understanding of what drives people's motives in every action that they take. No specific A-level subjects are required to undertake this course, but it is useful to have Sociology, Mathematics, Biology, and Psychology. No laboratory is conducted in the course study, but students are actively engaged in seminars and group discussions. Some of the aspects that are covered in this course include mind and behavior, social psychology, evolution and behavior, brain and cognition among others. Graduates of this course may work as counselors, youth and community workers, HR officers and psychologists and other related careers.


Public relations

Public relations is a course that equips students with the necessary skills that are required to maintain a good image of an organization. There are no specific A-level subjects that are required to undertake this course, but it is useful to have English. Some of the aspects that are covered in the course study include business strategy, transition to work, design in marketing, business fundamentals, human behavior and public relations. No laboratory work is conducted in the coursework. Graduates of this course may work as public relations officers, web designers, conference managers, recruitment consultant and marketing executives.
