AQA A-Level Business Revision Guide

Revising for AQA A level Business can feel overwhelming, but once you understand how the exams are structured and what the examiners want, everything becomes much more manageable. This guide breaks it all down and gives you clear, practical revision advice to help you feel confident on exam day 💪

📑 How Many Papers Are There?

There are two exam papers in the AS course, and both must be taken to get the qualification.

There are three exam papers in AQA A level Business:

👉Paper 1: Business 1

👉Paper 2: Business 2

👉Paper 3: Business 3

All three papers are equally weighted, so each one really matters!

📑 Paper 1: Business 1

• ⏰Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes 




• 🏆Marks: 80 marks (50% of total grade) 




• 📌Content: The content below is for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 as the topics are assessed across both papers.

1. What is Business? – role, objectives, external environment, forms of ownership




2. Managers, Leadership and Decision Making – leadership, decision tools, stakeholder influence




3. Marketing Management – marketing research, segmentation/positioning, mix decisions




4. Operational Management – quality, efficiency, capacity, supply chains




5. Financial Management – sources of finance, budgeting, profitability & cash flow




6. Human Resource Management – recruitment, training, motivation, culture

• ❓Question Types: 

🔹 Section A - Multiple Choice Questions

• 10 MCQs

• 10 marks total

• Students choose the best answer from a list of options

• Tests basic recall and understanding of core business concepts such as objectives, organisational types and key terms.

🔹 Section B - Short Answer Questions

• Worth - 20 marks

• These are usually:

  • Short definitions

  • Brief explanations

  • Short applied questions

• Designed to assess knowledge and simple application of the syllabus content

🔹 Section C - Data Response Questions

• Worth - 25 marks

• Contains two separate stimuli (e.g., a chart, extract or business context) each with several short questions underneath

• Questions include:

  • Interpretation of data

  • Applying theory to the context

  • Simple analysis or explanation based on the scenario

• These bridge theory and real business contexts

📑 Paper 2: Business 2

• ⏰Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes 




• 🏆Marks: 80 marks (50% of total grade)




• 📌Content: The same content as paper 1.

• ❓Question Types: 

🔹 Compulsory Case Study

• Approximately seven questions linked to a single business case study

• This paper is all about applying knowledge to a given scenario, not standalone recall.

Typical question types in this paper include:

1. Shorter applied questions

   • Often ask for definitions, simple calculations or basic application of concepts to the case.




2. Analysis questions

   • Ask why certain business issues exist or the impact of decisions.




3. Extended responses

   • Later questions in the case study are longer and require structured answers, often involving evaluation or judgement based on the data and scenario. 

   
   
   
   

📑 Paper 1: Business 1

• ⏰Duration: 2 hours




• 🏆Marks: 100 marks (33.3% of total grade)




• 📌Content: For each paper, the whole of the specification content can be assessed.

9. Strategic Methods: How to Pursue Strategies – growth methods, innovation, globalisation, technology




10. Managing Strategic Change – change management, barriers, culture, implementation and evaluation

• ❓Question Types: 

📍 Section A - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

• 15 MCQs worth 15 marks total

• Each question usually has four options

• Designed to test basic knowledge and understanding of business concepts

• Quick recall and straightforward application of terms (e.g., “What is break-even?”)

👉 Good revision: practice MCQs on each topic to build confidence.

📍 Section B - Short-Answer Questions

• 35 marks total

• Typically multi-part questions where you:

  • Define / explain concepts

  • Apply ideas to mini scenarios

  • Make simple calculations sometimes

• Answers are usually a few sentences each, clear and specific

👉 Good revision: practise recall + short Case Studies.

📍 Section C and Section D - Essay/Extended Response

• Two essays worth 25 marks each

• You get choice in each section (pick ONE of two questions)

• Essay style questions include:

  • “Discuss…”

  • “To what extent…”

  • “Evaluate…”

• These demand analysis and evaluation, not just definitions!

👉 Good revision: practise structuring answers using PEEL/PEEL-chain and linking to examples.

📑 Paper 2: Business 2

• ⏰Duration: 2 hours

• 📌Content: The same content as paper 1 is assessed in all papers.

• Approximately 33 marks each

• Each question is multi-part (e.g., (a), (b), (c), (d))

• Based on business data - graphs, financial figures, tables, short extracts

• Expect:

  • Short definitions / explanation

  • Interpretation of data (e.g., “What does this trend show?”)

  • Application to the business context

  • Analysis (e.g., “Why might profits fall?”)

  • Evaluation (e.g., “Assess whether the business should invest…”)

👉 Good revision: practise data interpretation and pull in real business context examples.

📑 Paper 3: Business 3

• ⏰Duration: 2 hours




• 🏆Marks: 100 marks (33.3% of total grade)




• 📌Content: The same content as paper 1 is assessed in all papers.

📍 One Compulsory Case Study

• Based on a scenario you haven’t seen before

• Followed by approx. 6–7 questions increasing in demand

• Questions typically include:

📈 Application/Analysis Questions

• Apply business theory to the case scenario

• Analyse business decisions and likely impacts

📊 Extended Evaluation Question (often 12–20 marks)

• Example formats you might see:

  • “Assess the importance of…”

  • “Evaluate whether the business should….”

  • “To what extent is strategy X better than strategy Y?”

• Requires strong balance of arguments + justified conclusion

👉 Good revision: practise linked questions - interpret info → analyse impacts → evaluate choices.
