I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life.
The human body is one of the most complex and interesting organisms in the planet, yes, we are way far from being perfect (biologically speaking). Still, there’s no doubt our bodies are something beyond incredible.
And when you start to think about, to really think about it, it’s incredible the thousands of living organisms that live within of our bodies. Because yes, in case you weren’t aware, our bodies hold thousands of living organisms.
That’s precisely what I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life is all about. In this fantastic book, we take a look at all of those tiny microscopic beings that live within ourselves, and how we are sharing our lives with them.
This book is fascinating because it sets a great premise from the very start: We are not alone. And not in the cheesy, romantic way many people say it, but in a realistic, scientific approach.
There are thousands of different kinds of bacteria and microbes living within our bodies, right now. Moving with us at every step of the way. So no, as much as you’d like to think you are alone, you aren’t. There’s a whole tiny world inside you living and breathing as you are reading this.
Throughout the book we begin to discover how the microbes are essential to life and do they help us see things from a completely different point of view like before, actually appreciating this deeper version of what we are.
The book is wonderfully written in a way that takes such a subject as microbes and bacteria and how they affect the human body and makes it extremely interesting, to the point you begin to appreciate these little beings inside you.
Author Ed Young takes it upon himself to explain to us how the microbes that live inside us, within us to be precise, are incredibly beneficial and essential to our health, and how we are cohabitating with them in this bizarre but functional way.
Perhaps the best thing about this book is how it takes something so small and uses it to give us a bigger vision about life, about who we are as humans, and shatters the false knowledge that we are somehow living alone since the moment we are born, which isn’t true at all.
This book is honestly exceptionally well structured. Author Ed Yong has a particular way to make these complicated subject shine and get everybody’s attention to the point you won’t be able to put the book down until you have finally finished it!
