COURSE SUMMARY



Accounting/Finance

Accounting is a discipline that aims to equip you with skills that will enhance your ability to deal with accounts related tasks and also skills of decision making, communication, problem-solving, business focus, and numeracy. Additionally, it will help you gain proficiency in working in industries such as marketing, management of public finances, and banking among others. There are no specific A-levels subjects that are required to undertake the course but it is resourceful to have to be good in Economics and Mathematics. This is a lecture only based course and lessons can be conducted by use of tutorials in small groups.


Aerospace engineering

Aerospace engineering is a course that equips one with skills that aid in the design, manufacture, and operation of equipment that which are able to defy gravity. The various A-level subjects that are required for one who is interested in taking the course include Mathematics and Physics. This is solely because the course involves the combination of knowledge from mathematics, computer science, physics engineering and design. The course is not a lecture only based course since it also involves some lab work where students are required to practically display their understanding of the theories that they have learned. Graduates of Aerospace engineering can comfortably work as Maintenance Engineers, Aerospace Engineer, Manufacturing systems engineer and Automotive engineers among others.


Agriculture

An agricultural course equips one with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve optimum production for both animal and plant production. Additionally, it equips one with skills of farm management skills that are environmentally friendly. An A-level in either Chemistry, Biology or Physics is required when undertaking the course. Other subjects that have proved to be useful for this cause include Geography, Environmental Science, and Business Studies. It is not a lecture only based course since there is some lab work that is normally conducted as one progresses with the course.


American studies

American study is a degree course whose aim is to equip students with the knowledge of American history, culture, literature, ethnicity, and politics. The interested student is only required to have English literature or history as the A-level subject to qualify for this course. Moreover, it is an advantage to have studied Politics since it is a crucial area throughout the course and the student is not required to have any work experience. This interdisciplinary degree is a lecture-based course since it does not need the use of lab to do any practical activity. Students can organize themselves into groups where they can share online tutorials and discuss them.


Anatomy/Physiology

Anatomy is a degree course which mainly focuses on human cell, tissue, skeleton, and organs whereas Physiology focuses on how the internal body structure works. Anatomy combined with Physiology focuses on the body structure of a living thing. The A-level subjects required are Chemistry and Biology. Also, there are subjects which have proved to be advantageous such as Psychology, Physics, and Mathematics. It is not a lecture only based course since students have to use a lab for practical lessons which involve dissection and observation of the internal structures. This course gives students who have an interest in studying medicine and body functions without studying a medicine course.


Animal science

Animal science is a course where students are provided with enough knowledge of animal biology. Additionally, they learn how human being relates and depend on animals for food and leisure. The various A-level subjects required are Chemistry and Biology. It is proven that a student who has studied Psychology, Physical Education, Physics, Geography, and Mathematics has the edge on this course. Animal science is a lecture and lab-based course since the students have to practice what they have learned in labs or fields. Graduates from this course can apply their knowledge and skills in bio-ethics, livestock production, and agriculture.


Anthropology

Anthropology course equips a student with knowledge and skills to study similarities and differences between cultures and society transversely around the world. Besides, the student can understand positive and negative issues affecting society such as religion. There are no A-level subjects required, but it is useful to be good in Sociology and Biology. It is a lecture-based course, and the students can have field trips to enhance their understanding. Graduates have an opportunity to study for Ph.D. in Public Health Studies and International Development. Also, job opportunities available are such as Humanitarian aid worker, Social worker, Archaeologist and Public health worker.


Archaeology

Archaeology is an inter-discipline course which involves the study of human, artifacts, prehistory and any other physical evidence which was used and left by ancient human beings. It usually conducted through digging and excavating. The student can have an interaction with the past and learn the adaptive behavior of animals in the past. There are no specific A-levels subjects required to take the course, but it is advantageous for someone to have some knowledge in history. This course is not lecture-based only since students are required to do experiments on laboratory which includes the viewing of artifacts. A graduate of this course can get jobs such as Archaeologist, government officer and being a lecturer.


Architecture

Architecture is a degree course that equips the students with the art and science of planning and designing buildings of different types. The student also gets to appreciate and understand the megastructures that are built using the current technology. There are no A-level subjects required to undertake this course, but it is resourceful to have learned Art, Physics, and Mathematics. Not only is the course lecture based but also the students get to do practical work and practical placements. Graduates of this course can become a lecturer, a building surveyor, architect, town planner, conservation officer, a structural engineer or proceed to do a masters in Architecture.


Art and design

Art and design is a course that equips students with skills which then enables them to work as professional designers and artists in various capacities. In this course, there are no specific A-level subjects required for a person to have learned but it subjects such as Art, Modern foreign language, History, English literature is an added advantage. Art and design is both lecture and lab-based. This is because the students carry out projects which majorly involves designing. This course is an extremely competitive industry, but graduates can become artists, graphic designer, advertising executives, a textile manufacturer, multimedia designer and fashion designers.


Art history

Art history is a course that equips the student with the skill of analyzing and writing about art. The course teaches students transferable skills such as IT literacy, teamwork skills, and flexibility. There are no specific A-levels required to study this course. Having studied subjects such as History, Art, English literature, Religious studies, Modern foreign language is a considerable advantage in undertaking this course. Art history is a lecture-based course where students are required to do a research-intensive study. Also, they do field studies at various galleries and museum where later on they carry out practical projects. Graduate get to have an opportunity to become an artist, illustrator, and museum curator.


Asian studies (East & South Asian Studies)

East and South Asian Studies are courses that involve students in studying geography, language, and history of the Asian people. Countries included in this region of study include Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Laos, and Vietnam. In this course, there are no specific A-level subjects required to have learned. This is a lecture only based course, and no laboratory work is needed. Use of tutorials in small groups can conduct lessons. Visiting these countries to study more deeply may exclusively be organized by the university. Graduates can get various jobs such as translating and interpreting, tourism, business, marketing and international banking.


Astronomy

Astronomy is an interdisciplinary course that equips one with knowledge and skills in studying the physical universe, celestial objects and space. Besides, the students learn technical skills such as how to operate a telescope to observe and analyze celestial objects. The required A-level subjects are Maths and Physics. This is because the course involves the combination of knowledge from mathematics and Physics. It is also useful to have Chemistry and Further Maths. Biology

Building and surveying

Building and surveying course is a very technical course that requires A-level in mathematics. Other subjects that are of importance to have include Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. Students undertaking this course will be equipped with skills that will enable them design and appropriately plan for building projects and the conservation of historic buildings. This is not an all lecture-based course as it involves some field work too as the students are expected to display their understanding of the knowledge they have learned in class. Business and management studies

Business management studies is a course which aims at equipping students with skills that will enable them to organize and control how any company functions. To undertake this course, no specific A-level subject is required, but it is resourceful to have some subjects such as Business Studies, Mathematics, and Economics. Celtic Studies

To undertake this course, it is necessary to that a student has an A-level in either a humanity or a language. Graduates from this course may work in museums, teach and publish some historical books among other tasks that are related. Work experience is not part of the course, and no lab work is undertaken when studying the course.


Chemical engineering

Chemical Engineering refers to a course that is focused towards equipping students with skills that will help them to combine physical sciences and life sciences to develop and convert raw materials into useful finished products to be used for various purposes such as pharmaceuticals. A-levels in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are necessary for one to undertake the course. Additionally, having Further Mathematics and Design Technology can be useful. Computer games design and programming

Criminology

Criminology is a discipline that focuses on studying criminal behaviour among individuals. It helps the students to understand what pushes individuals to commit a crime and come up with ways of dealing with criminals while at the same time preventing crime. The entry requirements vary from one institution to another, but in general, A-levels in Sociology and Psychology are required. Additionally, it is useful to have Psychiatry and Social Anthropology.
